Introduction to Designing for Accessibility

Our popular six-week course empowers PreK-12 educators to create accessible educational materials for greater impact on student proficiency and engagement.

This course is the ideal introduction for schools and districts who want to ensure compliance with the US Department of Justice rule in April 2024 under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), mandating that state and local governments, including educational institutions, make their digital content accessible.

Through these practical sessions, educators will:

  • Learn foundational concepts of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Gain skills to assess and ensure digital learning materials comply with accessibility standards.
  • Explore tools and strategies for creating and delivering accessible digital content.
  • Practice methods to remove barriers, enabling all students to engage and demonstrate knowledge in various ways.
  • Strengthen teaching practices with essential accessibility skills for digital and hybrid learning environments.

Choose from three options for course delivery

This dynamic course is available in three delivery formats to support different scheduling needs and styles of professional learning. Tailored to meet the needs of educators at all levels, the course is a great choice for general and special education teachers, curriculum coordinators, administrators, instructional technology specialists, paraprofessionals, and more.

The online Self-Directed version of the course allows educators to study at their own pace over the summer. This is a great way for a grade-level team or a school to complete their professional development independently and discuss what they’ve learned after returning for the new year.

The course is hosted on the Canvas learning platform and includes three digital modules covering Accessibility, Assistive Technology, and Accessible Educational Materials.

Enrollment in the Self-Directed Course can start any time beginning on June 2, 2025. If you’d like to start on a specific date, please let us know during checkout.

Upon enrollment, educators will have six weeks of access to complete the course. Each module will take about two weeks to complete and includes a mix of readings, multimedia, and activities.

The coursework is the equivalent of 24 contact hours.

Ideal for educators who want access to extra support, the Instructor-Led Course includes two remote group sessions with a live expert facilitator and access to office hours for one-on-one support with them.

The course is hosted online in the Canvas learning platform and includes three digital modules covering Accessibility, Assistive Technology, and Accessible Educational Materials.

Participants will have access to the course from June 2nd to July 28th. Each of the three module will take about two weeks to complete and includes a mix of readings, multimedia, activities, and deliverable assignments from the instructor. This coursework is the equivalent of 24 contact hours.

The Instructor-Led course also includes three live sessions with CAST facilitators: a Kick off session on June 2, optional Office Hours on July 7, and a Closing Session on July 28, each at 12pm EST.

Bring CAST’s accessibility expertise directly to your school or district with our engaging in-person professional learning and development. During each dynamic workshop session, an expert facilitator from CAST will guide up to 30 educators for over six hours as they collaborate with their colleagues to acquire practical, immediately applicable strategies.
