Title: From Artificial to Assistive: AI Literacy, Accessibility, and Universal Design
In today’s diverse classroom, “one-size-fits-all” instruction is a barrier to student success. This high-energy, 45-minute session redefines the intersection of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Accessibility, and Artificial Intelligence. Joined by Assistive Technology professional Dr. Hillary Goldthwait-Fowles, we will move beyond AI as a mere productivity tool, positioning it as essential Assistive Intelligence that ensures every learner has a seat at the digital table.
Participants will explore how AI can proactively dismantle learning barriers by automating compliance-based accessibility while simultaneously fueling the flexible instructional goals of UDL. We will move rapidly from theory to practice, demonstrating how to use generative AI to “level” complex texts, create multi-modal representations of content, and provide executive function scaffolds for students who need them most.
