Defining Accessible Educational Materials

  • Learners vary in all kinds of ways, including how they interact with educational materials based on physical, sensory, and learning differences.
  • Learners use a range and combination of senses and modalities to make meaning of information in the materials they’re provided.
  • Some learners don’t have the same choices in how they receive information from materials due to physical, sensory, and learning disabilities that impact mobility, sight, hearing, and how the brain processes language.
  • Accessibility doesn’t change the content of a material.
  • Educational materials can be designed to be accessible from the beginning. When they’re not, the format of certain materials can be adapted to match the modality used by a learner.
