  • Personalize Learning with the UDL Lens: Empower All Learners with Agency and Self-Advocacy Skills
Preconference: Wednesday, March 27, 9:00 am–12:00 pm ET
Presenters: Kathleen McClaskey & Luis Pérez
When each learner can understand and advocate for how they learn, barriers to learning can be removed and engagement and motivation can result. But where do you begin? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and personalized learning can be the perfect match to have every learner realize agency and self-advocacy skills so that they can take ownership to learning. UDL leverages the latest research from the neurosciences in order to create more inclusive learning experiences, but how can we use UDL to empower every learner with the tools and skills to become independent self-directed learners with agency? In this workshop, participants will learn a clear process and a set of practical tools that can guide every learner to understand how they learn using the UDL Lens of Access, Engage and Express, gain agency in their learning and acquire the self-advocacy skills to be prepared for college, career and life.
Please note: Preconference registration is required.
  • UDL Implementation for Administrators
Preconference: Wednesday, March 27, 1:00–4:00 pm ET
    Presenter: Jennifer Levine
Are you sold on UDL and ready to start implementation? Come join us for an afternoon of learning, planning, and design. Analyze your school or system’s readiness; learn about systems and infrastructure to support UDL growth; create a plan for culture change in your school. This workshop will provide you with tools (and time!) to begin building your approach to school- and system-wide improvement. Recommended audience: District leaders, school principals and administrators, and instructional coaches.
Please note: Preconference registration is required.
  • Getting from Here to There
Thursday, March 28, 10:00-10:20 am ET
    Presenter: Luis Pérez
  • Moving Beyond Access through Intentional Design
Thursday, March 28, 11:15–12:15 pm ET
    Presenter: Jennifer Levine
Are you fascinated with the idea of supporting expert learning, but not sure exactly what this entails? Join Jennifer Levine, the Director of Professional Learning at CAST, for this exciting design activity. Engage with other session attendees to create a lesson that challenges ALL students to become expert learners and learn how to bring your teaching to the next level.
  • Deepening UDL Practice through a "UDL Video Club"
Thursday, March 28, 1:15–2:15 pm ET
Presenters: Jenna Gravel, Allison Posey, Emily Ortiz, and Christina Rosenthal
This session shares findings from a study that explored the potential of a “UDL Video Club” to support teachers to deepen their UDL practice. The Video Club included two researchers and two fifth-grade teachers who met regularly to analyze footage from the teachers’ classrooms. Throughout the year, the teachers developed their understandings of UDL as they analyzed instructional moves and student thinking through a UDL lens. In this session, the researchers and teachers involved in this study co-present findings that reveal how the Video Club supported the teachers to leverage UDL in new ways, to reflect on instructional goals, and to increase cross-disciplinary collaboration. The researchers and teachers will then lead an exploration of the features of the Club that proved especially useful in supporting teacher learning. Finally, participants will engage in a Video Club “simulation” and reflect on the potential of this approach in their own schools and districts.
  • Journey Mapping EdUX Research & Design
Thursday, March 28, 1:15–2:15 pm ET
Presenters: Kim Ducharme, Kevin Kent, and Patti Ganley
Learn about how journey mapping — a powerful instrument for storytelling and visualization — can be adapted to help learning design teams better understand educational experiences and needs over time, and give agency and voice to participants in the process. Watch the educational R&D team from CAST apply journey mapping to empower all educators and diverse learners to share their stories and collaborate on educational research, design and development. Then, roll up your sleeves and try it out on areas relevant to your own contexts.
  • Simulate the Learning Brain
Thursday, March 28, 3:20–4:20 pm ET
    Presenter: Allison Posey
Participants in this session will represent individual neurons within a simulated neural network of the brain. Together, we will actively model how the brain learns. This simulation allows participants to experience first-hand how unique each brain is and how important the design of the environment is for learning. It will deepen understanding of how we learn so that we can be more intentional in our design for learning for every individual.
  • UDL in Maker Spaces, Music, and Design Thinking
Thursday, March 28, 3:20-4:20 pm ET
    Presenter: Jose Blackorby
Like UDL? Like Maker Spaces? Like Music? Like Design Thinking?
This is for you. Come and apply UDL to think about learner variability, making, and music.
Come and engage in design thinking to apply UDL and design thinking to David Rose, The Stones, and Lady Gaga!
Leave with variability in mind, and leave with some awesome music mixes!!!
  • Do You Think Accessibility When You Select Digital Materials? Quality Indicators Are Here for You
    Friday, March 29, 11:15 am – 12:15 pm ET
    Presenter: Cynthia Curry
Explore the Quality Indicators for the Provision of Accessible Educational Materials and Technologies (AEM) and self-assess your school’s edtech procurement system. Quality Indicators with Critical Components for the Provision of AEM, developed by the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials, guide K-12 state and local agencies, higher ed institutions, and workforce development programs in planning, implementing, and evaluating dynamic, coordinated systems for the timely provision of AEM. A comprehensive procurement system that includes accessibility can streamline the provision of AEM by addressing multiple factors, including compliance, timely delivery, written guidelines, learning opportunities, data collection, data use, and allocation of resources. Come to this session to reflect, discuss, and take away a self-assessment tool that you can bring back to your school for monitoring continuous progress.

You will have an opportunity see the items and consider how to apply them in your own context. In addition, we will present the teacher dashboard, built using UDL principles to help teachers see student progress and mastery and to support instructional decisions. You will contribute to next iterations of ISMART as well as new applications for the approach. You will learn that assessment can be fun!!!
  • Accessibility Makeover
Friday, March 29, 1:15–2:15 pm ET
Presenters: Cynthia Curry & Luis Pérez
Be inspired to make your self-created documents, graphics, and videos accessible to all learners. The POUR model from the W3C will be used as a guide you can use for creating your own accessible educational materials. The four principles of POUR: Perceivable means that learners can see and hear the content presented in a material; Operable means that learners can interact with the content with a variety of tools; Understandable means that learners can understand the content and enjoy a predictable experience; and Robust means that the content works well with current and future technologies. The AEM Center tool, Designing for Accessibility with POUR, which includes tutorials for specific skills related to each principle, will be used as a resource. Common examples of teacher-created materials will be first displayed in traditional formats, followed by POUR-aligned accessible versions. Bring a material of your own to practice an accessibility makeover!
