On behalf of Joy Zabala’s family and colleagues, CAST today announced the establishment of a fellowship program in her honor. The Joy Zabala Fellowship in Assistive Technology & Accessible Educational Materials will celebrate the life and work of our dear colleague, Joy Smiley Zabala, EdD.

Joy, who passed away in June after a short illness, had a substantial impact on the education field in promoting inclusion for learners with disabilities in K-12, postsecondary, and workforce settings.

The fellowship will support emerging, early career professionals who, in collaboration with a seasoned mentor, will a) strengthen their expertise and skills in the use of assistive technology and accessible materials and b) share what they learn with the larger community of stakeholders.

“Joy was an inspiring and much-loved mentor and colleague to so many,” says CAST CEO Linda Gerstle. “This fellowship will honor her life’s work and ensure that it continues in all the ways Joy would have wanted.”

To celebrate and ensure her legacy, tax-deductible donations may be made online or by mail to the Joy Zabala Fellowship Fund, c/o CAST, Inc., 50 Salem St, Building B, Ste 303, Lynnfield, MA 01940-0030.
