    My most memorable experience with CAST was when I visited the office for the first time in 2005 and learned about UDL. I knew this was the framework I needed for my son, who has Down syndrome, to be successful in school and to help teachers better educate all students. That is when I started collaborating with CAST to promote UDL in state and federal policy, and I founded the National UDL Task Force in 2006.

    The early days of CAST were filled with thoughts and dialogues about meeting the needs of individual students and not just teaching to the middle. It seems common sense now, but back then, it was twisting educators’ thinking about what they had always done in classrooms. Being dyslexic, I often wondered what my school life would be like with that philosophy and attitude. Anne, David, and the CAST team were taking on the world of education. And for me, this was very personal.

    CAST today announced the appointment of Jose Blackorby, PhD, as Senior Director of Research and Development. In this capacity, Dr. Blackorby will lead CAST’s research, project development, and technical assistance efforts. He will also open a West Coast office in the Bay Area.
