UDL Toolkit Procedures
The UDL Toolkit is designed to guide you in structuring and conducting your own
workshop on Universal Design for Learning. Its procedures offer a framework for
teaching and learning about UDL, presenting key concepts with links to activities
and online/downloadable presentations and resources. The toolkit has four primary
components: theory sessions, application sessions, hands-on sessions, and supplementary
sessions. Each session presents different aspects of the UDL toolkit, providing
you with session overviews, annotated companion slide presentations that can be
viewed on-line or downloaded as a PowerPoint® file, presentation instructions,
participant materials, and a listing of resources. As a presenter, you may adapt
the presentations to suit your own style with appropriate citations for CAST's work.
It takes approximately 11 hours to complete the entire UDL Toolkit; additional
time is needed to create and develop a plan of action and/or view model units and
lessons on the TES Web site. In planning your UDL workshop agenda, you should determine
your professional development goals and the needs of your audience and then select
sessions accordingly. Some choices for presenting the UDL workshop include:
- presenting the UDL Toolkit in a linear fashion as outlined below
- choosing your own order of session presentation (always beginning with the
Theory session to provide participants with a framework for understanding Universal
Design for Learning)
- selecting specific sessions for specific audiences
Because of time constraints during the school year, you may decide to offer the
whole UDL Toolkit as a two to three-day workshop during summer vacation, or you
may choose to offer parts of the toolkit during staff development time during the
school year. You may also offer components of the toolkit as part of an after-school
in-service professional development program.
Use your own discretion in determining your audience size, but remember to keep
the size manageable to support small group discussion and collaboration. Your presentation
computer should be connected to the Internet and to a projection device. The workshop
participants need to have access to computers (1 computer for every 2-3 participants)
loaded with software that supports the sessions (see Resource section for suggested
software).
The session overviews that follow provide you with brief session descriptions,
approximate session times, and suggested audience agendas. Available presentation

Overview: The introduction provides a framework for applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to meet the instructional needs of all learners, especially those with disabilities.

Origins of Universal Design (slides 4-9)
Overview: This section identifies the foundation of Universal Design in architecture and makes connections to Universal Designs in everyday life.

Origins of UDL (slides 10-12)
Overview: This section presents a shift in CAST's understanding of the challenge of special education: not to "fix" the child who has a problem, but to "fix" the curriculum (goals, methods, materials, and assessments) so that it can meet diverse learner needs.

UDL and the Learning Brain (slides 13 - 24)
Overview: This section presents an overview of the learning brain. Highlights include an overview of the three interconnected neural networks and implications for the uniqueness of each learner.

Overview: This section focuses on providing participants an overview of tools and approaches for applying Universal Design for Learning to their practice.
Optional Session: Action Plan Development/Sharing
Overview: The goal of this session is to provide participants time and support to develop and share their action plans. You should allow approximately 3 - 4 hours.
- Model UDL Lessons
Estimated Time: Time varies, depending on the extent of lesson demonstration

(online at the UDL Training Guide Toolkit Examples Page) Provide examples of applied UDL principles in curriculum design and implementation. You should use these lessons to provide audience with concrete examples of UDL in classroom practice and print out components of online units/lessons that support your demonstration.
