Finding the Barriers
Because curriculum barriers occur in the intersection between methods/materials
and student characteristics, you can find barriers by considering the materials
and methods that you normally use as they relate to particular student characteristics.
The models provided give examples of this way of thinking, and highlight the
fact that missed opportunities for students to shine or become deeply engaged
are as important as are problems of access.
Using the Finding Curriculum Barriers tutorial and tool can help you move your
thinking from a student-by-student diagnostic approach to analyzing the curriculum
itself. This shift in focus is a critical step in using UDL to reach each learner.
