Mr. Garcia thought carefully about the goals, or intended outcomes, for his lesson. He knows that the standards developed by national, state, and local curriculum groups are statements of what his students must know and be able to do and that he is responsible for creating goals and objectives that determine the design and direction of every element in the curriculum-how media and materials will be selected, how instruction will be implemented, and how student progress will be evaluated.
For this lesson, Mr. Garcia's goal is to engage his students in a lesson on the writing process in which they apply the skills of grammar and usage they have been developing. He plans to expand his traditional instructional approaches to include a Universal Design for Learning approach in his instructional methods. He is particularly interested in structuring his lesson to raise students' level of engagement in the writing process.
