Curriculum

Mr. Garcia thought about his lesson both from the perspective of a traditional lesson presentation and from the perspective of Universal Design for Learning. He compares both approaches to help him make decisions about how to work with the diverse student population he has in his second period English class. As he plans his lesson, he considers theses four main components:

  • Goals for instruction
  • Media and materials to be used by the students
  • Instructional strategies that he will use
  • Means of assessment

Since he is particularly concerned about his students' lack of engagement in the writing process, he decides to have his students write an article to submit to the school newspaper. Four students in the senior class were recently involved in a serious automobile accident in which high speed and reckless driving were cited as the cause of the accident. Mr. Garcia asks his students to write an article describing their reaction to the accident and their recommendations to their peers for ways to develop responsible driving habits
