Goals

Mrs. Jones thought carefully about the goals, or intended outcomes, for her lesson. She knows that the standards developed by national, state, and local curriculum groups are statements of what her students must know and be able to do and that she is responsible for creating goals and objectives that determine the design and direction of every element in the curriculum -- how media and materials will be selected, how instruction will be implemented, and how student progress will be evaluated.

For this lesson, Mrs. Jones' goal is to engage her students in doing research on the physical and topographical characteristics of a region in order to draw a map. She plans to expand her traditional instructional approaches to include a Universal Design for Learning approach in her instructional methods. She is particularly interested in structuring her lesson to help students become more proficient in doing research and to improve their ability to read social studies text material.
