  • CAST offers a number of robust (and free) learning tools. These tools, designed and tested as part of CAST’s research projects, help educators, parents, and students experience the power of flexible learning environments.

    2011–2014

    Researchers from CAST and Arizona State University developed and tested Writer’s Key, a web-based tool that guides and supports middle-school students in writing argumentative (persuasive) and informational (expository) compositions. The research team based the design of Writer's Key on the framework of Universal Design for Learning. In addition to scaffolding users in the writing process, Writer's Key also provides supports for users such as multiple models, skill development activities, interactive work spaces, guided questions, and a breakdown of writing by process components in a flexible work space. Additionally, built-in peer to peer and teacher to student feedback support the writing process.

    CAST is partnering with the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) to create a Web-based professional development course to help 8th-grade Science teachers understand stereotype threat and adopt UDL-based methods to reduce the likely effects of threat in their everyday instruction.

    In this empirical study, CAST explores the prevalence and impact of stigmatization and stereotype threat on mathematics performance among public high school students (grades 9-12) with specific learning disabilities.
