    Senior U.S. Department of Education officials visit CAST and local schools that practice UDL during "Opportunity Across America" Back-to-School Bus Tour. Sue Swenson, acting assistant secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and Ruth Ryder, acting director of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), will visit CAST on Tuesday afternoon for a “Learning and Listening” roundtable discussion of hot-button topics such as ways to improve K-12 literacy instruction, assessment, classroom products, and teacher preparation to make schools more inclusive and effective.

    2015–2020

    Science Notebook in a Universal Design for Learning Environment (SNUDLE) is a digital solution to support the active science learning of elementary school students, including those who have difficulty reading and writing or are otherwise unmotivated for science learning. UDL is leveraged as the design framework so that construct-irrelevant barriers to science learning are actively lowered through the provision of support, and just-in-time scaffolding is provided to support the process of active science learning and, specifically, the effective use of science notebooks. This current Goal 3 project is a replication study that builds on the positive outcomes from a prior efficacy trial.

    The Multi-Gen Makers project is a collaboration with residents from Bayview Towers, a 200-unit affordable housing complex in Connecticut. Through a design-based research approach with iterative cycles of co-design, the project will develop and research a sustainable model for multigenerational making and learning that build the skills and dispositions that can support a STEM career trajectory.
