    AccessATE supports the ATE community in making curriculum accessible for all students and faculty, including those with disabilities. This session will focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which is a curriculum design framework for creating more inclusive learning environments for all. ATE grantees will learn how AccessATE can work with them to create accessible and universally designed curriculum with hands-on assistance, and get a sneak peek at making a UDL syllabus, course media, and OERs.

    Accessible educational materials and technologies provide opportunities for learners with disabilities to “acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services” as learners without disabilities. One format for presenting content in a flexible way that addresses the needs and preferences of our diverse learners is EPUB. In this session, participants will learn about best practices for ensuring the accessibility of EPUB publications so that they work for all learners.

    We know from experience and neuroscience that individuals learn in varied ways. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides educators with practical strategies and techniques to ensure that all learners can meet high expectations. In this session, we will explore the foundational concepts of UDL as one component of an inclusive learning environment - the other two being the universal design of the physical space and the accessibility of the learning tools and materials. The discussion will include demonstrations of a number of new tools for making STEM content accessible for a variety of learners.

Topics in this introductory webinar include legal issues, the changing language of AEM, a decision-making process, and how to locate and use supporting resources.

This course has been designed to align with the “Prepare” phase in the UDL implementation process. This phase is typically characterized by development of a strategic goal and plan of action for UDL implementation.
