What educators need to know about UDL and how to apply UDL principles to practice.
August 1-3, 2011 (8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Days 1 and 2; 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Day 3)
How can educators minimize learning barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all students? How can educators design lessons and curriculum units to address the wide range of learners in today’s classrooms? What next steps need to be taken to integrate UDL into their school environment? In this three-day institute, participants will explore these questions while learning about the principles and application of UDL. In addition to hearing presentations from leaders in the field of UDL, participants will have the opportunity to actively engage in guided practice and hands-on experiences as they work on the development of a lesson, unit of study, or action plan to integrate UDL into practice.
The institute highlights UDL, emphasizing the UDL guidelines and application to practice, including:
- Connections between learning and neuroscience
- The three UDL principles and related benchmarks and checkpoints
- The curriculum framework of goals, methods, materials, and assessment as a structure for designing lessons
- Examples of practice that illustrate alignment of UDL to curriculum
- Hands-on exploration of technologies that support UDL
- Understanding that UDL is a change initiative
Participation is limited to 24 participants in order to promote collaboration, opportunity for discussion, and support from CAST staff.

This institute is designed for individuals and teams of educators who are interested in learning about and applying UDL to practice. Suggested team members include classroom teachers, special educators, supervisors of curriculum, staff developers, and administrators.

Location:
The institute is offered at CAST in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Located just 10 miles north of Boston, Wakefield is conveniently located at the intersection of two major highways (I-93 and I-95/128), and is easily accessible by commuter rail (MBTA) from Boston. Wakefield is also less than 20 miles from the charming seaside communities of the North Shore.
